Description : The report contains the proceedings of the Half-yearly General Meeting of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industries held on Tuesday, 31st May 1881. It discusses the address to His Excellency the Viceroy, the budget for 1881-82, the license tax, revision of the customs tariff, labor districts bill, insolvent debtors' bill, bill to amend the law relating to bills of exchange, cheques, promissory notes, factories bill, trade-marks bill, petroleum bill, the port trust, proposed construction of a tea-warehouse by the port commissioners, east Indian railway; rates for cotton piece-goods to the north-west and Punjab, delivery of goods at Howrah, interference with the coal trade of Bengal, mail departure form Bombay, closing of mails at the Calcutta post office, small cause court bill, delay in the disposal of suits, general steam survey act, merchant shipping bill, establishment of telephonic exchanges, sailing ships bill of lading- Calcutta to United Kingdom, execution in native states of decress by British courts, loading and ventilation of grain vessels, employment and pay of leadsmen, issue to officers of the mercantile marine of certificates of competency of a lower grade, when higher certificates are cancelled or suspended, exposure of European seamen to the sun while employed in work on boardhsip in the hot season, trade in oil between Calcutta and Australia, new members, funds of the Chamber, revised tonnage for the port of Calcutta, schedule of commission charges, members of the Chamber, rules and regulations of the Chamber.
